Somali-based terror group al-Shabaab has threatened to attack shopping centers around the world, including malls in the U.S. and Canada.

The group, credited with the attack last year on a Kenyan mall, said it would conduct attacks against "Jewish-owned" shopping centers.

The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab released a video over the weekend in which it threatened to attack various shopping centers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., reports KMPS. The group specifically targeted the Mall of America, located in Bloomington, Minnesota as well as the West Edmonton Mall in Canada.

In response, the Mall of America released a statement concerning security, which the shopping center has increased.

"Mall of America is aware of a video that was recently released which included a mention and images of the Mall. We will continue to monitor events with the help of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. As always, we take any potential threat seriously and respond appropriately," the statement said.

Similarly, the Edmonton Police Service said they are monitoring the situation at the mall but assured patrons that the video did not make a "specific threat," according to CBC News.

"However, we as a policing agency ...  are absolutely paying attention to this," said deputy police chief Brian Simpson.

The 77-minute long video that surfaced on YouTube mostly talked about the Westgate Mall terror attack al-Shabaab conducted in the Kenyan capital on 2013. Around 67 people died in the attack.

"If just a handful of mujahedeen fighters could bring Kenya to a complete standstill for nearly a week, then imagine what a dedicated mujahedeen in the West could do to the American or Jewish-owned shopping centers across the world," the man on the video said.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson told ABC's "This Week" the threat is being taken seriously.

"Groups like ISIL, al-Shabab, AQAP (al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula) are now publicly calling for attacks either through the internet, through videos, through publications, which means that we need to respond militarily but we also have to have a whole government approach through law enforcement, homeland security and frankly countering violent extremism efforts here in the homeland in communities," he said. "We're in a new phase now and I'm afraid that this most recent video release reflects that."

According to Reuters, however, the Department of Homeland Security is not aware of any imminent threats to shopping centers.

"As a general matter, however, we are not aware of any specific, credible plot against the Mall of America or any other domestic commercial shopping center," said Homeland Security Department spokesperson Marsha Catron in a statement.
