It might not be baseball season but it sure seems like it for general managers who are looking to patch up their teams ahead of the upcoming winter meetings.

This offseason has already gotten off to a busy start with trades involving big-name stars such as Prince Fielder, but there are still a handful of players who are looking to hit the jackpot with possible monster contracts looming.

Free agent infielder Robinson Cano has dominated the headlines as he hopes to land a contract that is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $28 million per year for nine years, sources told ESPN, but it is still early. Cano and the Yankees are reportedly still a whopping $80 million apart, such a large gap that neither side is willing to meet until the difference shrinks to a reasonable margin.

In other news, the crosstown New York Mets were going to meet with free agent pitcher Bronson Arroyo but the team's interest in the right-hander was overblown. The Mets, according to ESPN, are "not super high" on Arroyo.

In Minnesota, the Twins agreed with free agent pitcher Phil Hughes on a three year deal worth $24 million. The former Yankees pitcher struggled mightily in games at Yankee Stadium and he hopes that the change in scenery and the favorable ballpark dimensions will help him resurrect his career.

This year's MLB winter meetings will take place from Dec. 9 to Dec. 12 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort.
