Despite all of the complaints about Apple's new operating system, more than 74 percent of North American phones are running on iOS 7. This was according to a report published by Chitika.

The majority of people who made the upgrade did so in the first week after it was released, but many others took their time and eventually did the upgrade during the months that followed.

The numbers reflect the progress that has been made by Apple since the release of the last operating system; the iOS 6 operating system took twice as long to reach 83 percent. Currently only 22.4 percent of iOS users are still using iOS 6 at this time.

"Breaking down iOS 7 adoption by users of Apple's two marquee devices, the iPhone and iPad, a similar picture emerges," the report read. "To quantify iOS version distribution by Apple device, Chitika Insights examined tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian iOS-based online ad impressions within the Chitika network generated between October 25 and November 18, 2013.

On the other hand, the iPads currently in operating have not been updated as much as the iPhones. Only 63.8 percent of iPads have made the upgrade while 24.6 percent still run on iOS 6. 8.8 percent use iOS 5.

The difference between iOS 6 and iOS 7 was much greater than the jump in previous generations of operating systems. Most notably, the brand new design marks a new era in the appearance of the devices.

"iOS 7 started with a desire to take an experience people love and make it better," the Apple website says. "To make it even simpler, more useful, and more enjoyable -

but still feel instantly familiar. The design of iOS 7 is beautiful because it's all of those things. And it's the start of a new chapter for iOS."
