Motorola is updating its Moto G Google Play Edition to Android 5.1 Lollipop, as the company's plan to skip versions of the Android 5.0 Lollipop and leapfrog devices straight to 5.1 has seemingly been confirmed.

The update for the Moto G (GPE) is being rolled out over the air (OTA), so owners of the specifically "pure Android" versions of the device should be getting notifications about the upgrade automatically, starting Wednesday, April 8, going forward.

To check to see if an update is available, users can go to Settings and then "About Phone." Even if the device is eligible for the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, it might not hit immediately, though, as these rollouts tend to happen in stages.

As we previously reported, Motorola has listed the devices getting Android Lollipop updates as far back as late October 2014, though at the time, the former Google subsidiary hadn't made the decision yet to skip earlier versions of Lollipop, like Android 5.0, in favor of updating straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop. Some Motorola devices, like the 2014 Moto X, are currently running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

The list of Moto devices that will eventually get Android 5.1 Lollipop include both first and second generation Moto X handsets, both generations of the Moto G (including the 4G LTE variant), the Moto E, and the Verizon Droid lineup, which includes the Droid Maxx, Droid Mini, and Droid Turbo.

"Certain devices, specifically the first-generation Moto G 4G LTE, first-generation Moto X, and Moto E, located in several regions will all skip Android 5.0 and head on over directly to Android 5.1," announced Motorola Product Manager David Schuster, according to TechNewsToday, adding, "Given the improvement in Lollipop 5.1, we have decided to move all efforts to upgrade these devices directly from KitKat to Lollipop 5.1."

Google Play Editions and other Motorola handsets running "pure Android" tend to be first in line for the Android Lollipop update, followed by carrier versions and Moto handsets running Motorola's ever-so-slightly altered version of Android OS. For Motorola, improvements in the Android 5.1 OS have made the 5.0 skipping update more appealing. For the Verizon, as we previously reported, updating straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop also makes sense, given the operating system's baked-in support for Voice over LTE (VoLTE), a calling feature that Verizon offers.
