Academy Award-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to go on a diet that doesn't have much to do with food, but has everything to do with money. She has accepted a challenge, like many others, issued by a well-known NYC star.

From an article on the Huffington Post, in an effort to let people see what it is like to live on a SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) budget, celebrity chef and NYC Food Bank board member Mario Batali has issued a challenge to anyone who will take it.

The challenge is simple: Live on a food budget that rounds up to about $1.38 per meal. Alternately, if you cannot do it, make a donation to #CanDoNYC.

This is in response to the politics coming out of Washington, notably from Congress. They've cut the food stamp budget twice since 2013 and now the $29-a-week budget that recipients are expected to live on can be a little untenable.

Paltrow actually posted a picture on her Facebook account of what she purchased on the budget, but what's missing from the picture is not the food, but plentiful meats, milk and cooking supplies.

First off, she has limes, cilantro, eggs, brown rice, corn, onions and tortilla shells. But that is not reasonable for people whose diets routinely include meat products. Even still, there is not even any milk.

With that being said, Paltrow may be able to reasonably eat from this diet, but not everyone has the same needs as her, so carbs may need to be added at some point. But the point she directly makes is that there are no funds left over for meat, bread or milk. These are all the budget allows.

There are also some that have taken jabs at her for her selection to start with, such as in an article from Business Insider. But as it quickly points out, these are just what she chose. Others will need to take the challenge for themselves to see what they can squeeze into their own $29-dollar budget.
