Earth Day marks the anniversary of the modern environmental movement that started in 1970, reports Earth Day Network.

In the 1970s, Americans were using leaded gas with massive V8 sedans. Unregulated industry polluted the air and land with toxic smoke and sludge. Although mainstream America was oblivious to environmental concerns at that time, the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's New York Times bestseller "Silent Spring" changed everything, according to the Earth Day Network. The book raised awareness about pollution's effects on the environment, living creatures and public health.

Earth Day's mission is to broaden and activate the environmental movement worldwide using education, public policy and consumer campaigns.

Each year, companies offer freebies, deals and activities to bring awareness to Earth Day, which this year takes place on Wednesday, April 22.
