Every year TV stations order a bunch of pilots. Many shows are cancelled after the first season, but a selected few become major hits. Here are the top contenders to return along with those shows that already didn't make it.

Returning shows:

The Blacklist

The James Spader-led spy thriller was all the rage on NBC during its first season. It also proved to be strong lead in for hit music competition series The Voice.

Teen Wolf

The popular 80s reboot Teen Wolf is making it's way back to MTV for a fourth season. Following the lives of teenage werewolves and the people that hunt them, it's success is a welcome change for the reality TV heavy channel.

Downton Abbey

The juicy period drama will return for a fourth series on PBS this January. It previously aired in its entirety in the U.K. Lucky Brits!

Shark Tank

Budding entrepreneurs head into the "Shark Tank" to pitch products and services to a panel of successful businessmen and women. Some products are just so bad you have to wonder how in the world did they end up on national TV.

Cancelled shows:

Lucky 7

The show won the dubious honor of becoming the first show of the fall 2013 TV season to get the boot. With the lowest Tuesday night ratings of any show on TV, ABC executives quickly made the right decision to replace the failing program with Scandal reruns.

Back in the Game

Kind of like Bad News Bears but a lot worse, Back in the Game centered on a Little League Baseball team comprised of athletically inept kids. It rode the ratings bench until the brass at ABC cut their losses in November. The rest of the episodes have not aired, but they may be made available on DVD at a later date.

Ironside

Blair Underwood, a beloved TV actor, didn't last long in his new role as Detective Robert Ironside. Ironside was a remake of a 1970s show of the same name starring Raymond Burr. Luckily NBC has plenty of content including Dateline to fill the Wednesday 10pm timeslot. Perhaps Hollywood should stay away from remakes.

On the bubble shows:

Nashville

Starring Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) and Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) the country music drama is full of surprises. The biggest surprise of all would be if it got the axe especially since it is full of great music and cat fights.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD

Quick! A superhero needs to save Agents of SHIELD from an untimely demise. The special effects-laden action show premiered with a whopping 12 million viewers. That many eyeballs led to increased hype and expectations for a show that already had big shoes to fill (2012's blockbuster hit, The Avengers). Sadly, the ratings have dropped steadily since the first episode.
