In what turned out not to be an April Fool's joke, the Android software development kit (SDK) updated with the latest Google mobile OS, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, for the Nexus Player at the beginning of April.

Check out the factory image MD5 file ("fugu" 5.1.1 LMY47V for Nexus Player), publicly available for download at the Android developers' page. Google later confirmed the release of the update for the Nexus Player.

As we previously reported, the quiet appearance of the Android 5.1.1 update for the Nexus Player begged the question, "When are the other, more popular, Nexus devices getting the latest Android build?" Especially for those who are still experiencing memory leaks that cause random reboots and crashing apps on their Nexus devices with Android 5.1?

One thing is pretty certain, according to GottaBeMobile: Nexus 5 users can especially expect an Android 5.1.1 update OTA release date at some point in the near future.

That's because the Nexus 5 was specifically mentioned in Google's official changelog -- in reference, happily enough, to some bug fixes that are coming to that device with the new Lollipop update -- for the Android 5.1.1 firmware. Unless it's the cruelest, most intricately staged April Fool's joke by Google ever.

Those bug fixes for the Nexus 5 include the memory leak issue, along with crash problems encountered by users of the popular 2013 flagship device when using the phone's camera.

A release date (or a confirmed release, at all) is still unknown and unofficial. But count on the Nexus 5's Lollipop update hitting Google's Android Open Source Project (ASOP) before it rolls out OTA, meaning that if you don't want to wait for the automatic update OTA update notification to hit your phone (and you have the knowhow), you can immediately sideload the official OTA manually right after it's released on the site.

The Nexus 5 appears to have been suffering the most setbacks with Android 5.1 (though it's certainly not alone in the Nexus family), so it's likely to be the first updated. Later, expect the Android 5.1.1 OTA to become available for the Nexus 4 (LMY47R), Nexus 6 (LMY47I), Nexus 7 2013 edition (LMY47W), and Nexus 9 (LMY47S).

Other devices likely to get the Android 5.1.1 at some point include Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, the HTC One M8 and M9, the LG G3 and G4, The Moto E, G, and X (2014), and the Sony Xperia Z3 and Z4. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves.
