Miguel Cotto is set to defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title against Daniel Geale on June 6 and if he wins, WBC will order him to face mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin, but the Puerto Rican is reportedly more interested in fighting Saul Alvarez.

Golovkin, who is the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion, earned the right to face Cotto for the WBC title after winning against Martin Murray and Marco Antonio Rubio in his last two fights.

However, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions revealed that Cotto and Roc Nation Sports approached them about the possibility of agreeing to a set-aside deal.

Golovkin is set to defend his titles against Willie Monroe on May 16, where a win should lead to a bout with Cotto if the Puerto Rican wins against Geale. Loeffler said, though, that Cotto's camp hinted that they want to face Alvarez first before agreeing to the mandatory defense against Golovkin.

If Cotto decides to face Alvarez, he will be stripped off his title unless Golovkin's camp agrees to a set-aside deal. Loeffler said Cotto's camp has already approached them about such agreement.

"We've been approached by Roc Nation already to try to work something out with Cotto," Loeffler said. "So it just depends on if there's something that's acceptable to work out."

Loeffler said that they will agree to a set-aside deal if they will be given guarantee that Golovkin will automatically be the next opponent of either Cotto or Alvarez. The K2 promoter also stressed that Golovkin should be given financial compensation for paving way for the Cotto-Alvarez fight.

"The first thing would have to be that whoever wins that fight would have to guarantee to fight him, which so far they haven't," Loeffler said. "The second thing, there would have to be some significant financial compensation to Gennady."

Alvarez, who holds an impressive 44-1-1 record with 31 knockouts, is scheduled to face James Kirkland on May 9 at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. The Mexican boxing superstar said he expects to face Cotto if he wins against Kirkland -- either in September or in the near future.

"The fight with Miguel Cotto will come in time. It's a nature fight," Alvarez said. "It may be in September or later, but I'm sure that at some point it will because it is inevitable."

Alvarez and Cotto were linked to a showdown earlier this year, but the two camps failed to find a common ground again. They also talked about a possible fight last year, but did not reach an agreement.
