The "Dragon Ball" series will be returning to television this summer with "Dragon Ball Super." The series will continue the story of Goku, his family and friends from where the last series left off, 18 years ago.

Toei Animation announced in a press release that "Dragon Ball Super" will air on Japanese television July 2015 but not English-language release date has been announced. However, after more than two decades, fans are undoubtedly excited for the return of one of the most ubiquitous anime series in history.

Since the release of the first "Dragon Ball" series, followed by "Dragon Ball Z," the series have become widely popular around the world and continue to be referenced in memes. They are part of popular culture as much as other anime series and shows are.

Toei explains the new series will pick up after Goku's battle with Majin Buu. It is to be produced by Fuji Television and Akira Toriyama, the show's original creator, will oversee the project.

"Having loved 'Dragon Ball' since childhood, it is very exciting to be a part of this project," said Osamu Nozaki, producer for Fuji Television. "Mr. Toriyama has developed a plot that's not only a dream come true for Dragon Ball's millions of fans, but one that will foster in a new generation of viewers."

It also appears that Masako Nozawa, Japanese voice actor for Goku, Gohan and Goten, will return to the series.

"I've used the word 'cho' (super) in so many commercials, games and other media, it is fantastic that the long awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin," she said, referring to the Japanese word. "I hope that this series will last a long time and have the same impact around the world as its predecessor."

The series continues to remain alive through movies, according to the Verge, including "Battle of Gods" and "Dragon Ball: Resurrection F," which will be released soon.
