Though the film is almost two years away from release, Universal Pictures has revealed a bit more about the sequel to “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Fifty Shades Darker.”

Speaking at an event hosted by the Hollywood Reporter, Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures, talked about sequels and how the studio had improved its skills at making them.

"Feeling confident with that as a strategy enabled us to look at things like ‘Pitch Perfect’ or ‘The Purge,’ things that aren’t traditional franchises, but they’re franchisable ideas we could grow,” she explained.

However, the studio appears to be taking a different approach with “Fifty Shades,” which is not a franchise but more a trilogy. The second movie, which will be released in February of 2017, as announced last week, will be "more of a thriller."

Langley also touched upon the rumors surrounding the departure of director Sam Taylor-Johnson from the project. It has been alleged that she and author E.L. James clashed over certain creative differences.

“For the record, the movie we ended up making is exactly the movie I wanted to make and that the studio wanted to make and that our director wanted to make,” she told the Hollywood Reporter, but did not address the rumors directly.

Langley did express satisfaction with the decision to enlist James’ husband, Niall Leonard, for the second film.

"He actually did a draft that wasn't credited on the first movie, and he did a really good job,” she explained.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the teaser released on the Blu-ray, which hits stores on May 8, does not hint “thriller” but more “romance.” However, the teaser is less than 30 seconds long. It only shows Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan, what could be a tuxedo and a mask, as if preparing for a masquerade.
