Officials say the man accused of shooting an NYPD officer in the head will be arraigned on Sunday on charges that include attempted murder, according to The Associated Press.

Police officer Brian Moore remains in critical but stable condition after being shot by Demetrius Blackwell. Officers arrested Blackwell on Saturday, and it is not clear if he has a lawyer.

According to police Commissioner William Bratton, Moore and his partner were in an unmarked car and plain clothes when they pulled up to a man who was suspiciously adjusting his waistband. The 25-year-old officer was rushed to the hospital after his encounter with Blackwell went bad.

"They did not have an opportunity to get out and return fire," the commissioner said.

Witnesses described Blackwell to officers as they searched for him. Police later arrested the suspect near the crime scene in a house on the block where he lives.

"Our hearts are with his family, his loved ones," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press conference. "Our hearts are with his extended family, the men and women of the NYPD.

"This was an unconscionable act of violence, not just against one police officer, but against the city of New York and against the values we hold dear."

Neighbors near the scene were surprised that a police officer was shot in their quiet close-knit safe community.

"You walk down the street, no trouble," said Sandreaus Adam, 52. "This is not a neighborhood where you're just going to hear shots."

Blackwell was taken into custody about an hour and a half after the shooting although no weapon was found, USA Today reports.

The 35-year-old suspect has been arrested in the past on numerous charges including criminal possession of a weapon and robbery.

Moore is the fifth NYPD officer to be shot since December after protests against the shooting of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
