The "Secrets and Lies" finale, "The Lie," picked up where we left off last week: outside Jess Murphy's house where a hysterical Ben Crawford shouts for his missing daughter, Abby Crawford.

Jess taunted him through the window. Ben called Detective Cornell who sent police. Ben broke inside Jess' home to search for Abby. The police entered the home with guns drawn and told Ben to get his hands up. He told police Jess had his daughter.

Jess accused Ben of rape. Police took Ben into custody. Detective Cornell observed it all. Before she followed Ben to the police station she was called into Jess' house where a blood-soaked blue jacket was soaking in a sink.

At the precinct, Cornell told Ben that Abby had been located and is fine. Abby went for a walk and didn't tell anyone.

Cornell also told Ben that she knows he did not kill Tom Murphy. Ben was relieved.

In the final episode, Christy Crawford learned her husband didn't kill Tom. She returned home with their daughters to celebrate the holidays with Ben.

Ben had divorce papers ready for Christy when she arrived. They agreed divorce was necessary.

Later, at the Crawford home, Abby apologized to her dad for worrying him. Her excuse for taking the walk was that she didn't want to hear him and Christy fighting.

Ben went outside to put a ladder away. He found a pair of bloody tennis shoes hidden inside a loose vent cover under the guest house. He carried the shoes into the dining room and dropped them on the table.

"Abby, is this blood on your sneakers?" he asked in horror.

"I'm so sorry, Daddy," she said.

Ben made Abby explain what she had done.

Cue the flashback: Abby snuck over to Jess' house with flashlight in hand. She entered the house with a key. She woke Tom to tell him that if they run away his daddy will come back. Tom happily agreed and grabbed his toy tank to take on their adventure. He put on a jacket since it was raining. Abby grabbed Jess' blue jacket from the coat rack to wear.

Tom and Abby walked into the woods. Tom dropped his tank and wanted to look for it, but Abby would not let him. He cried and wanted to go home. He threatened to tell on her and ran. Abby struck him on the head with Ben's flashlight several times. She cried over Tom's lifeless body. She dragged him, screaming for help, getting blood on Jess' jacket.

Abby's motive: having heard her parents fighting about Jess and that Scott had left, Abby convinced Tom that if they ran away, Scott would come back. Tom would have his father back and Ben wouldn't be with Jess.

The Crawford family, reeling after Abby's confession, debated how to handle the situation. Natalie Crawford wanted to call the police, but Ben said that he'd "fix things."

Ben and Abby went into the woods and burned the bloody sneakers. Ben wanted his daughters to go away with Christy, but Natalie refused. She wanted to go to the police. Abby drove away with Christy. Ben dropped off Natalie at Michael's house. Ben then confessed to Tom's murder, though Detective Cornell did not believe him.

Detective Cornell told Ben she had video evidence that Abby took a bus to Jess' house to put the jacket in the laundry sink. For the first time, fans saw Detective Cornell emotional; she explained to Ben that she had to put her own daughter away. Abby would kill again, Detective Cornell said, but Ben could only see Abby as his little girl. He went to jail for the murder of Tom Murphy.

In the closing scene, Christy was driving in the car with Abby. "None of this would have happened if I'd just gotten Tom to the river," Abby said quietly. Christy said nothing and kept driving.
