While at times we take our mother's love, care and hard work for granted, there is one day each year to both thank and celebrate all that moms do: Mother's Day. This day celebrates the efforts of every woman whose selfless acts raise children into well-mannered, healthy, compassionate and productive adults.

Mother's Day became an annual tradition in the United States during 1870, while most of Latin America did not start celebrating Dia de las Madres until the 1920s. Every family celebrates the important holiday with unique traditions and fun customs. Most of all, we remember, and give thanks, for all that mothers do to nurture and care for family members.

While it is not a federal holiday, Mother's Day is a significant date on the calendar. Family members send a card and gifts to show their love and admiration for mom. Judging by online trends, the iPad Air 2, espresso machines, engraved jewelry and flowers are popular gifts for mom this year. Many families plan special dinners or trips to visit mom to celebrate the special day.

The U.S. is not the only place Mother's Day is celebrated. It is celebrated around the world, especially in Latin America countries, such as Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica.

In Mexico, mom's special day is held in such high regard that many government offices are closed.
