What in the world is going on with Selena Gomez? The 21-year-old star is on the top of her game commercially and critically, but she just suspended a large part of her "Stars Dance" tour. Word on the street is that technical difficulties or problematic choreography had nothing to do with the delay. Apparently the tour is on hold because of lupus, an autoimmune disease that can flare up via prescription drugs, infections or even sunlight. The chronic condition is currently incurable, but can be treated with medication. Popdust dropped the bombshell report earlier today.

"Sources close to the singer tell Popdust that Selena was diagnosed with lupus a couple of years ago and that she has suffered multiple 'flares' recently, causing facial swelling, extreme fatigue, headaches and joint pain," the website said on Friday.

Popdust mentioned that Selena's globetrotting life might have adversely affected her condition.

"Selena has been going full throttle the past few years and her lupus is really catching up with her right now."

The singer-songwriter hinted that an illness might have been the cause of the January 2014 concert cancellations.

"My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them," Gomez said in the statement. "But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be."

Rumors were spreading that the singer was headed to rehab à la Demi Lovato. But a representative for Gomez says the singer is just taking a break.

"She is not having a breakdown. She wants to be the healthiest that she can be and this means taking a little break. But she is fine. She is OK."

Other than the occasional flare-up it is good to hear that Gomez is apparently otherwise healthy. It looks like the cancellations aren't because of drug or alcohol abuse or any kind of mental issue.
