“Maze Runner 2” has just released its first trailer and it showed the Gladers escaping from the Maze and being introduced to the Scorch. The group of youngsters then realize that solving the Maze was, apparently, not the end.

The sequel to Wes Ball’s 2014 book-to-movie adaptation will still be featuring the story’s main cast, Dylan O’Brien of “Teen Wolf,” Kaya Scodelario of “Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” Thomas Brodie-Sangster of “Love, Actually,” Patricia Clarkson of “Shutter Island,” and Ki Hong Lee.

In addition to them, “Maze Runner 2” will also be showcasing Rosa Salazar of “Insurgent,” Giancarlo Esposito of “Breaking Bad,” Nathalie Emmanuel of “Furious 7,” Barry Pepper of “Monster Trucks,” and Aidan Gillen of “Game of Thrones.”

The first installment of the “Maze Runner” franchise, which hit theaters last year, was a huge sleeper hit at the global box office. Box Office Mojo noted it has gross earnings of $340 million worldwide, which is good news for a film that only cost $34 million to make.

“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” will be picking up directly where the first movie left off. After having escaped the Maze that WCKD set up for them, the Gladers venture out into the open to face their greatest challenge yet, to uncover the wicked plans of WCKD, according to Fox Movies. They team up with resistance fighters as they attempt to cross through the Scorch -- a dry, barren land that was left of the planet -- and take on the superior forces that come their way.

Screen Rant noted that if the movie's recently-released trailer is of any indication, then it would appear that Ball has opted, once again, to resume the first movie’s relatively guarded approach to storytelling, at the same time, flat-out spoiling some significant parts of the film.

As the team try to make their way through the Scorch, strange-looking people and shady conspiracies make it hard for them to figure out what is actually real and what is merely part of WCKD’s test. As mentioned in the report, the same thing might occur for the sequel’s audience, or, at least, for those who were not able to read the source material written by James Dashner.

Wes Ball also purposely did not include some major plot points from the young adult books. The most notable one that was excluded is the romance between Thomas, played by O’Brien, and Teresa, played by Scodelario. The love arc would have been a strong influence for the second movie, just as it was in the second book.
