The sequel to the hit movie adaptation of the Marvel comics original "Guardian of the Galaxy", is still a long way off but details about the second film are already arriving in trickles. And it seems that a new "guardian" would join the cosmic superhero crew once it returns to the big screen.

Director James Gunn revealed this new detail while in a live interview on Twitter's Periscope last weekend. The director, who also penned the script for the first movie, as well as the second, did not say who the additional character would be.

However, it could be that the new guardian is a female lead. In 2014, Gunn revealed in an interview with Screen Rant that he really wished to add another female member to the lead characters.

"One of my true hopes is that we can have at least two women in the next iteration of the 'Guardians' whenever that may be whether it's the next movie of the next one after that, that we can break this thing of having one women in every Marvel movie although I must say, I'm not sure what sex Groot is, I don't see any junk so I think he's his own thing," told the director.

While the details on the new character are vague, Gunn was pretty clear that it would not be an Avenger. Some speculate that Star-Lord's adoptive friend, Yondu, could join the guardians, considering that his character in the comics followed that path.

The director also said that the casting process has already begun for the new and additional characters that would be seen in the sequel. He also revealed that he has had informal talks with the actor he thinks will fit the new guardian in the movie. However, nothing has been finalized yet.

Movie Pilot, however, has come up with a list of possible characters that Gunn could add to the sequel. The list includes superheroes Phyla-Vell, Angela, Moondragon and Captain Marvel. Out of the four, Captain Marvel seems like a good candidate. Considering that she's slated to have a movie of her own, introducing her in "GOTG 2" could be a good way to segue to her upcoming film.

The plot for the sequel is still unknown. Gunn said on his livestream that while the second movie is "about fathers," he was not too thrilled with the story arc of Star-Lord's father, J'Son of Spartax. This in itself could mean that a diversion from the true identity of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord might be in the works for the movie.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" would hit theaters in 2017.
