The "American Idol" Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken is reportedly "actively considering" a run for Congress in North Carolina's 2nd District in the U.S. House.

The sources said that Aiken has been making phone calls to main political figures to assess whether he would have the necessary support to be elected. He allegedly has been working with local political strategist Betsy Conti, and was in Washington D.C. in last month to examine polling data.

A source claimed  the singer is "actively considering" the run, and is "sounding and acting like a candidate."

The seat that the former star of the reality singing competition seeks is currently held by Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers, who won her seat in 2010 with less than 1 percent of the vote in her district.

Clay Aiken, a Raleigh, N.C. native, who lost the "American Idol" competition to Ruben Studdard back in 2003, has performed in the Broadway show "Spamalot," recorded several successful albums, and made a series of TV appearances, including "Celebrity Apprentice" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

Aiken also has been active with UNICEF since 2004, when he was appointed a U.S. Fund for UNICEF National Ambassador with a focus on ensuring children have access to education. UNICEF has sent the singer to Uganda, Afghanistan, Somalia and Kenya. In 2010, he appeared at a Capitol Hill briefing to encourage passage of anti-bullying legislation.

The filing deadline to participate in the primary is Feb. 28. North Carolina's primary will be held May 6.
