In what has become a heartbreaking scene in Maryland, a woman was found at Wills Memorial Park in La Plata on Friday at around 7 a.m. pushing her dead toddler in a park swing.

Police were alerted to the situation by a witness who said they found it strange that the woman had been pushing the toddler in the swing for an unusually long period of time, possibly since the Thursday before, as reported by Charles County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson to Reuters.

When officers arrived at the park, which is about 35 miles south of Washington, D.C., they found the 24-year-old woman pushing the boy in the swing. They immediately noticed the toddler in the swing was not alive.

Early reports indicate that the child had not suffered any severe trauma, but the toddler had been dead for hours. Further information on what the cause of death was for the young boy is pending an autopsy, which will be performed by the office of the chief medical examiner in Baltimore.

The boy's mother has been transferred to a nearby hospital where she will undergo testing for any medical or psychological conditions that may have contributed to or been exasperated by the situation.

As reported by Daily News, police had to cut the chains of the park swing to remove the 3-year-old toddler from the swing.

"(We are trying) to find out what was going on in her life ... what led to this moment," Richardson said. "It's a very sad and tragic situation for the mother, her family, the officers. All of us want answers. We're working very hard on that."

Woman was unhinged and the scene was a grisly discovery in what appears to an ideal suburban setting.

The woman's identity has not been released by police yet, and her mental condition is still unknown at this time.
