In a few short hours, the final curtain will fall on the Bowl Championship Series. The final college football championship game in the pre-playoffs pits the unbeaten Florida State Seminoles against the SEC champion Auburn Tigers. Should Auburn win, it will mark the 8th straight BCS championship for the SEC.

Florida State, however, looks poised to finally end the SEC's dominance. Led by Heisman winning quarterback "famous" Jameis Winston, the 'Noles have averaged 53 points per game, ranking first in the nation in points scored and sixth in total yardage. They've only scored below 40 points once this season in a 37-7 drubbing of arch-rival Florida on the road in Gainesville.

In fact, FSU has one every single game this year by at least two touchdowns.

Those gaudy margins of victory are a result of a defense that has performed as impressively as their offensive counterparts. Opposing teams have averaged only 10.7 points per game and only one has scored more than 17. To this point, FSU has been equally dominant against both second-tier and top-flight competition. When they faced off against Clemson, who were ranked #3 at the time and just defeated 6th-ranked Ohio State in the Orange Bowl, Florida State won by a score of 51-14. And that was at Clemson.

Auburn, however, is unlikely to be intimidated. They've gone 12-1 against a rugged SEC schedule, defeating previously #1 ranked Alabama en route to the conference title. And although their average margin of victory is much slimmer than that of their opponents, the Tigers see that disparity as an advantage. Unlike FSU, Auburn has experience pulling out narrow victories.

Plus, Auburn is a self-proclaimed "team of destiny." To back up that claim, they can point to a pair of remarkable victories. First, they won on a miracle play against Georgia. Then, in one of the most incredible endings in recent memory, Auburn's Chris Davis caught a missed field goal and returned it the length of the field as time expired against Alabama. That play turned an almost certain loss into the most improbable of victories and propelled them to their current position as the second ranked team in the country.

Vegas has listed Florida State as favorites to win by more than a touchdown. On paper, they've shown a stronger attack and a stouter defense than the Tigers. Auburn, however, has stared down far longer odds already, and they may benefit from their experience in close games.

In any case, Monday provides a fitting and exciting end to an oft-maligned BCS system. Number One is facing off against Number Two. In its last go around, the BCS finally got a matchup exactly right.
