Troubled Chicago Bears defensive lineman Ray McDonald has been arrested in California on domestic violence and child endangerment charges.

The NBC Bay Area affiliate reports the veteran McDonald was taken into custody sometime after 6 a.m. early Monday while visiting the Silver Creek home of friend and former San Francisco 49ers teammate Justin Smith. The 30-year-old McDonald recently signed a free agent deal to join the Chicago Bears.

Sources told NBC McDonald had been renting a nearby Santa Clara apartmetn for his ex-fiancee and baby and on Sunday night decided to ask her to leave. The sources added McDonald then left the home to allow her time to vacate, and by the time he returned police had been called.

"I'm not dealing with any more of this negative stuff," McDonald's mom, LaBrina McDonald, told reporters when reached at her Florida home on Monday.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney decided not to seek charges against McDonald last August after he was arrested on domestic abuse charges related to a fight at his home with his then pregnant fiance. The DA also declined to charge him in connection with a December 2014 sexual assault claim in San Jose.

The 49ers cut bait with him at that point, but the defense-challenged Bears were more than willing to come calling, quickly inking him a one-year deal. Team officials were unavailable for comment on Monday.

Earlier this off season, McDonald told reporters, "I feel like I didn't do anything wrong but you know, still, it's in the spotlight. I'm just trying to move forward from it."

In the second case, involving a woman at a bar, McDonald has filed suit alleging defamation. His attorney Steve DeFilippis filed documents earlier this month insisting that the woman in question had consensual sex with his client on the night and morning the alleged attack took place after drinking with him at a bar.

Friends of the woman later told investigators she was known as a hardcore "party girl" who often staged accidents, which she posted on social media.
