Former New York Gov. George Pataki will announce his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday. The New York Republican will be the most recent entry to the ever-growing list of GOP candidates.

The three-term New York governor will announce his presidential bid in Exeter, New Hampshire, reports the New York Post. Rumors had been circulating regarding Pataki's intended to run, and his announcement late on Monday confirmed his plans.

"It will be a very stiff climb up a very steep mountain, but that hasn't stopped me in the past," Pataki told the New York Post, referencing poll data that does not favor the former governor.

However, Pataki's entry into the race could shift the lineup to the center, even if by a smidgen. Pataki is pro-choice and in favor of gun-control legislature. His policies concern mostly the economy, and he believes most issues should be up to the states.

"I'm a Republican following in the tradition of Teddy Roosevelt who understands that conservatism isn't just economic policy but it's also preserving and enhancing the outdoors," he explained. Pataki has also advocated for environmental protection.

His stance on climate change may even put him at odds with the rest of the political field.

However, Pataki's record as New York governor for 12 years could push him forward as a true fiscal conservative. According to his website, Pataki's principles focus on cutting taxes, controlling government spending, and curtailing government's size.

During his tenure as governor he cut taxes in New York 19 times and increase savings to $140 billion while reducing the size of government and the number of people on welfare.

Local Republicans have thrown their support behind Pataki, releasing a statement last week backing the former governor.

"After having served this great state as Governor for 12 years with honor and integrity, it is a privilege for us to enthusiastically encourage Governor George Pataki to enter the race to seek the Republican nomination for the Presidency of the United States of America," the statement from leaders from the New York City boroughs said, according to the New York Observer.

The GOP leaders backing Pataki are Craig Eaton of Brooklyn, former Congressman Bob Turner of Queens, Adele Malpass of Manhattan, John Greaney of the Bronx and John Antoniello of Staten Island.

Pataki has made his views known on one contentious topic: the fight against ISIS. He told CNN's "New Day" last week he would be in favor of sending American troops to fight against the Islamic extremists.
