Three children were playing in an inflatable bounce house on Monday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when a waterspout came ashore and lifted them away.

The spout was powerful enough to lift the whole bounce house across a parking lot and onto a roadway, according to a report on CNN.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Memorial Day, according to Florida's Local 10 News.

Fort Lauderdale Police Sgt. DeAnna Greenlaw said the three children that were hurt in the incident were actually ejected from the bounce house. Two of the children were treated for minor injuries, including fractures, and released from the Broward Health Medical Center. A third child had been kept for overnight observation.

A witness told Local 10 that she was on the beach when the incident started to occur and that she could see "little kids start flying out, hitting the ground."

Another witness also reported that the bounce house was lifted as high as the palm trees in the area.

"Next thing you know you see kids flying out of the bounce house," the witness said.

The strength of the waterspout could be evidenced by the aftermath, which includes a broken concrete pole and light poles that had been knocked down.

Greenlaw said the bounce house was provided by the city for an official event that was taking place on Memorial Day. The attraction was properly secured to the ground, but the strength of the waterspout was able to overcome the secured protections that were in place. She said it was lifted across State Road A1A.

"This is an act of Mother Nature, something that could not be prevented, and we were unable to react quick enough to this waterspout," Greenlaw told Local 10.

USA Today reports that the child held overnight for injuries is in stable condition following this horrifying event.
