Although Nina Dobrev will not return to "The Vampire Diaries" next season, series star Ian Somerhalder hinted that fans will have a lot to look forward to since the show plans to revisit elements from Season 1 and 2 that made viewers fall in love with the show.

Elena said goodbye to her loved ones during the Season 6 finale after Kai put a spell on her that will keep her in a coma-like state as long as Bonnie is alive. As a result, it is likely that she will not awake from comatose for about 60 to 70 years from now.

While it's likely that Elena's friends in Mystic Falls will continue to mourn her death next season, Somerhalder teased that Season 7 will be hot and intense.

During an interview with Movie Pilot, the 36-year-old actor promised that fans can expected a "volatile, sexy" season in the fall, that will include some the dark storylines that made the show a hit.

"Stuff that we all fall in love with. Season 1, Season 2 of the show were so dark. It was awesome!" he said.

The actor also revealed how much he enjoyed watching episodes of the show from the first season with his co-star Paul Wesley.

"I was watching the one where Damon turns Vicki and they're dancing around in their underwear and we turned to each other and said, 'Holy s--t, man. This is happening. This is real." That was an amazing piece of television. I want to get back to that!'"

Earlier this month, Somerhalder opened up to Entertainment Tonight at The CW Upfronts about what's in store for Damon, Stefan and the rest of our Mystic Falls favorites without Elena.

"Our hope for the show is to go back to what originally made people fall in love with the show," he said.

"The dark, the sexy, volatile, the unpredictable -- these are all things that we look to encompass that was sort of enveloped in this season of the show," he added.
