Mexican authorities on Tuesday released singer José Luis Gastón Hurtado, better known by his stage name "Cox," following his arrest over the death of his girlfriend, Paola López, Milenio reported.

Gastón Hurtado had been taken into custody on Sunday after the bloodied body of López was discovered in Mexico City's Uxmal Street, according to La Opinión.

According to police, the couple had been consuming alcoholic beverages at the singer's apartment when they began to argue and a television set hit López on the head, La Opinión said. The woman's sister heard a loud noise and -- when she approached -- discovered the body with a wound to the head, the newspaper detailed.

But Gastón Hurtado said on Tuesday that his girlfriend's death was the result of an accident.

"It was a mishap during which a piece of furniture came down on my girlfriend's head; unfortunately, it happened to me," the singer noted. "It was a very sad accident for me, but that is what it was; it was an accident."

In a brief interview with Milenio, Gastón Hurtado also alluded to the drinking that had been mentioned in the original police report.

"We had come back from a party, I am not going to deny that," the musician admitted. "And, well, these things happen. But it was not exactly because of that; it was a slipup by my girlfriend," Gastón Hurtado concluded.

The singer's manager, Ernesto de la Portilla, provided the Mexican newspaper with additional details about the events.

"What happened is that they were living together," de la Portilla said, "and Paola went to the bedroom, which they shared. She ran into a piece of furniture, the furniture came down along with the television set; and, well, that is when the accident happened," the manager added.

Gastón Hurtado's apartment does not have a telephone, so the singer went to seek help in the street while López was assisted by her sister, de la Portilla contended.

The "Mi Gran Noche" star, for his part, suggested that his contact with the police was the result of a decision to "make myself available to the authorities," Milenio noted.
