Atlanta police are convinced the man who shot up rap star Lil Wayne's tour bus last month simply did so as a means of raising his profile in the street gang he is affiliated with.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jimmy Carlton Winfrey, 25, faces multiple felony charges, though he was not in police custody as of Thursday afternoon.

No one was injured in the early-morning hours of April 26 when shots rang out as two tour buses linked to the rapper and his entourage traveled on I-285. In all, Cobb County police said about a dozen people were on the buses, presumably including Wayne, who had performed just a short time before at the nearby Compound nightclub.

About a month later, police secured an arrest warrant for Winfrey, charging him with aggravated assault, terroristic threats and acts, criminal damage, possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal gang activity, reckless conduct and discharging a weapon near the street.

Winfrey is alleged to have been driving another vehicle when he fired the shots at the bus, which are estimated to have caused more than $20,000 in damages.

"Said accused did commit said act in order to gain status in his criminal organization by a committing a high profile shooting of a rival rap artist," the arrest warrant states. "Said accused has associated himself with known blood gang members in the Atlanta area."

On the night of the shooting, Atlanta police spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy told reporters officers from her department were summoned to the Mandarin Oriental hotel on Peachtree Road shortly before 4 a.m. "regarding someone shooting at a bus that Lil Wayne was on."

Witnesses were unable to provide police with any solid descriptions of the cars allegedly driven by the assailants, generically describing them as two white vehicles, possibly a Corvette-style vehicle and an SUV."
