For those looking to drop their holiday weight and thinking of going on a diet, 'U.S. News & World Report' has released its annual "Best Diets." The report has named the DASH Diet as the best overall diet for 2014 while Weight Watchers currently being endorsed by Jessica Simpson, Jenny Craig and Kim Kardashian was named the best weight-loss diet.

Best Overall Diet

DASH Diet stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and was developed by nutritionist Marla Heller, and was recently voted the healthiest diet in the U.S. by a panel of doctors.

The program "is a flexible and balanced eating plan," and has been endorsed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood institute. DASH focuses on lowering blood pressure and is lower in sodium (salt) than the typical American diet. DASH promotes eating more fruits, vegetables, fat-free as well as low-fat dairy products and consists of a lower cholesterol and fat intake.

U.S. News evaluated the diet and was top-rated because the program is easy to follow, nutritious, safe and effective for weight loss and against diabetes and heart disease.

Best for Weight Loss

People who are looking to lose the weight, the same report names Weight Watchers as the best weight-loss diet. Weight Watchers was honored because of its balanced nature. The advantage of this program is that it doesn't limit what food can be consumed. The theory is that aside from counting calories, you make healthy choices that will fill you up with good calories.

Individuals are allotted daily point totals that are based on your weight and activity level.

It's important to remember to consult your doctor prior to starting any diets.
