"Extant," the Halle Berry-starring CBS series about an astronaut who comes back to earth and finds herself pregnant after 13 months on a solo mission in space, returns for its second season on July 1.

The Steven Spielberg produced sci-fi program is heading for some big changes in its sophomore season. Goran Visnjic, the 42-year-old Croatian actor who plays Dr. John Woods, Molly Woods' (Berry) robotics engineering husband, will be leaving the series. But before he makes his full exit, according to Entertainment Weekly’s Natalie Abrams, he will make an appearance at the start of Season 2.

“The outgoing Goran Visnjic will be back for at least the premiere, in which Molly learns of a dangerous secret that sends her into a tailspin of epic proportions. ... I’ll just say this: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," Abrams said.

Just as Berry’s character finds herself with a virgin-birthed child in middle age, the series seems to be about miraculous events taking place at the wrong time -- or at least later than expected.

Writer and creator of the series Mickey Fisher had been toiling around unsuccessfully in Hollywood for years before he finally hit the big time by selling his pilot for “Extant.”

The news that he had sold “Extant” came to him on his 40th birthday. Over the years of trying to break in, he kept his wits by keeping to his craft.

“I think the best thing I ever did for myself was to not wait around for someone to give me a break. I kept writing, I kept making my own stuff, I kept raising my own bar and trying to get better. I entered everything I could (every reputable thing) and really tried to make my own breaks," he said in an interview with Go Into The Story“I learned to embrace the struggle and accept that even though this was going to be a long, difficult journey, I’d be better for having tried."
