The trailer to Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth" has been released after its world premiere this past May at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film is based on the play by William Shakespeare and has been anticipated for a number of months ever since it was announced that Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard were going to play the infamous couple.

The trailer looks to be visually stunning as it shows painterly images with both Cotillard and Fassbender. There are also a number of outdoor and indoor locations that showcase the terrain of Scotland and castles of England. The trailer highlights famous quotes from the play and there are also a number of action sequences.

More importantly, it highlights Cotillard and Fassbender's performances, which are already obtaining awards buzz. However, the trailer fails to mention a release date.

"Macbeth" made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival where it was booed by the foreign press but obtained rave reviews with the American and British press. Cotillard and Fassbender obtained Oscar buzz and Kurzel also received good reviews for his visual style.

The Weinstein Company has not announced when the film will be released, which is strange given the good word the film has obtained. The last time the company released a Shakespeare adaptation was in 2011 when Ralph Fiennes made "Coriolanus." That film obtained an awards qualifying date and was later released in January to a disappointing box office. The film received positive reviews but the Academy did not embrace it.

"Macbeth" is a more popular play than "Coriolanus" and Fassbender and Cotillard are currently two of the most popular stars in the business. Most of their films have been successes, even their indie films.

Fassbender broke onto the scene in 2008 with his film "Hunger." However, his breakout year was in 2011 when he starred in four films including "A Dangerous Method," "Jane Eyre," and "X-Men: First Class." That year he also starred in "Shame" for which he won the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival. Fassbender later went on to get nominated for the best supporting actor award at the Oscars for his work on "12 Years a Slave." The actor was recently seen in "Slow West" and will later be seen in "Steve Jobs."

Cotillard won the Oscar in 2007 for "La Vie en Rose" and later went on to star in "Public Enemies," "Inception," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Nine." Her work on "Rust and Bone" went on to get Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. This past year, she was seen in "The Immigrant" and "Two Days, One Night," for which she received a second Oscar nomination.

Cotillard and Fassbender will re-team next year for the video Game adaptation of "Assassin's Creed" which also be directed by "Macbeth" helmer Kurzel.

"Macbeth" has been adapted numerous times for the screen including the famous Roman Polanski adaptation. Orson Welles also adapted the play for the screen in 1948.

"Macbeth" tells the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought down by his ambition and desire.
