It's only been a week since Apple revealed iOS 9, the new OS X "El Capitan," and of course, Apple Music and already, the Apple nuts are at it again with rumors over the name, features, and release date of the upcoming iPhone 6s, 7, or perhaps something entirely different. Here's where things stand right now in the non-stop gossip of the digital community you might call iPhone rumorville.

Expected Improvements in Hardware Specs

The rumors around the upcoming iPhone 6s's camera have been swirling for a while, and according to GSMArena, the expected higher resolution 12-megapixel rear camera rumor still looks pretty strong. So does the expectation that Apple will up its RAM to 2GB, though that's less exciting and new than it likely is inevitable.

New Rumored Release Date, Pre-Order Date

But the latest from iPhone rumorville comes via GSMArena, which found an "exclusive" report supposedly sourced to an internal message from British telecom Vodafone to its staff -- though a copy or screenshot of the purported internal memo was no where to be seen in the piece from UK website Mobile News.

Needless to say, take this with a healthy-sized grain of salt:

"Vodafone has told internal staff the next Apple iPhone handset will be released on September 25," stated the article, without providing proof such an email exists.

Not only that, but the pre-order date was also purportedly spilled by Vodafone in its staff-wide email. "In an email to staff seen by Mobile News, [Vodafone] outlined pre-launch information," continued the rumor report, "including that the operator will begin taking pre-orders for the device from September 18."

Both dates are on Fridays, which is Apple's traditional launch day, and the timing in mid-to-late September jives with what Apple's done in the past -- if not with other rumor reports that have Apple launching the iPhone 6s or 7 early this year.

The fact that the launch date is ostensibly sourced to a British telecom is no big deal either -- Apple has simultaneously launched the last few iPhones in the U.S. and U.K. and there's no reason to believe the company wouldn't this year as well.

New Name?

Some hemming and hawing over the possible name of Apple's next iPhone has already occurred, with some saying that the name iPhone 6s and especially iPhone 6s Plus are an inelegant mouthful to say outloud and suggesting Apple might have enough updates to the iPhone 6 that it could warrant the iPhone 7 title anyway.

But others can't see Apple straying from the traditional course it has set over the past near-decade, which has this upcoming 2015 iPhone being the iPhone 6s.

Both could be wrong, according to the latest rumor, which states that Vodafone's only referring to the device as "the new iPhone" might suggest a new naming strategy similar to the titular change up Apple has done with iPads recently.

Don't forget, under Tim Cook's recent leadership, Apple has launched "Music" and "Pay" and "Watch," defying the traditional Apple naming conventions.

Come Sept. 28 this year, could we be lining up to buy the Apple "Phone"?

More likely, the lack of a specific name mentioned in the email (if said email really exists) suggests that Vodafone simply wasn't told by Apple this far in advance what the new iteration would be called -- because why would it?

Keep checking with us for more updates and rumors over the 2015 iPhone, at least the name of which we'll all hopefully be able to agree on, sooner or later.
