Will Forte is the co-creator, star and previous showrunner for Fox's comical take on apocalyptic shows "The Last Man on Earth." But now that he has given up his showrunner duties, it is possible he will have greater focus on the character or phase himself out of the show.

Deadline recently sat down with the former "Saturday Night Live" star and discussed the show, which includes the direction it may be taking in the future.

In the beginning, Forte -- along with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller -- conceived the idea of this series as an anecdote that sets the post-apocalyptic world apart from zombies and murderous cannibals. They wanted to see what it would be like if there were no such thing as emerging new factions and neo-political schemes to seize power.

Although Season 1 still had a few of those elements in it, the show was still supposed to be all about the comedy.

"We kind of thought it was going to be more of a cable thing, so we thought that the networks would politely pass," Forte told Deadline. "When Fox was very into the idea, it made me a little nervous because I thought they were going to make us change it around into this or into that, but they were great. They were so supportive of what we wanted to do. This is the show we wanted to do."

Forte recently gave up his showrunner duties on the show to former "The Office" executive producer Dan Sterling.

"This was truly an eye-opening experience and one that I'm delighted to have had, but I'm looking forward to this second season where I'm able to use some of those lessons from season one and really just have a smoother process," Forte told Deadline.

But it was the last scene of the first season that had people guessing that next season viewers might finally get some on-screen time with his brother, who is played by Jason Sudeikis.

"We definitely won't have the same number of character introductions next season, but there might be some people who get de-introduced, you know? You never know, we want to keep people guessing," Forte said. "We will just keep trying to find ways to make it fun and keep it lively. We always like trying to keep people on their toes. But I will say that Kristen Schaal is not going anywhere."
