The original concept for "Emerald City" was pitched to NBC before the 2013 - 2014 season and was supposed to air then, but NBC shut it down. But now, the show has been resurrected by the network and given a 10-episode order to air sometime in 2016, according to Deadline.

The series is based on L. Frank Baum's original 14 novels that were created around the city of Oz, as immortalized in "The Wizard of Oz." But like most shows that have been picked up as a TV adaptation from literature these days, the show is expected to take a dark twist.

The reimagining of the story is rumored to be like that of "Game of Thrones," just modernized with dark overtones present in the NBC series.

The official description for the show reads: "In 'Emerald City,' in the blink of a tornado's eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) and her K9 police dog are transported to another world, one far removed from our own -- a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. This is the fabled Land of Oz in a way you've never seen before, where wicked witches don't stay dead for long and a young girl becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands."

The official description refers to Adria Arjona, who has risen to fame recently with roles in CBS's "Person of Interest," HBO's second season of "True Detective" and a new, untitled TNT drama set in Miami. But "Emerald City" will mark the first leading role for the young Latina actress who is making quite an impression on audiences across the nation.

This new resurrection for the show brings on a new writer and executive producer, David Schulner, who will be joined by Shaun Cassidy with the EP duties. It will be produced by Universal TV.
