Season two of the popular online-only show House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, is set to be released on Feb. 14, 2014, garnering much anticipation. Fans of the show will know that season two, which was guaranteed at the start of the show, will have thirteen episodes just like the first season did, and they will again be released all at once, which enables binge-watching in which many Netflix users are already experienced.

Negotiations are already in place for the third season and beyond for the political thriller -- a popular genre at the moment -- which imagines present-day Washington D.C. and tells the story of a Democrat and House Majority Whip who decides to get revenge when he fails to get the nomination for Secretary of State that he wanted.

The show House of Cards did well at the Emmys by winning in the category of best web show and also received nominations at Golden Globes, although Breaking Bad eventually won. The critical reception of the first season was mixed, getting 76 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 25 reviews, so audiences curiously await what the second season will add.

"Big data" increasingly determines our consumption choices and House of Cards is no exception. According to GigaOm, "Netflix looks at 30 million 'plays' a day, including when you pause, rewind and fast forward, four million ratings by Netflix subscribers, three million searches as well as the time of day when shows are watched and on what devices."

Therefore Netflix was able to create a sure thing. First, it knew that a large number of its users streamed the The Social Network from beginning to end, a work by House of Cards director David Fincher. Also, films featuring Kevin Spacey are always popular and the original British version of House of Cards was a success, too. So by putting those three together, Netflix had a show that would be a good bet.

In something to think about, screenwriter Beau Willimon has said "This is the future, streaming is the future. TV will not be TV in five years from now ... everyone will be streaming."
