Manchester United remains mum on the discussions about potential transfer agreement involving their goalkeeper David De Gea and Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

De Gea, who only has one year left in his contract with Manchester United, is continuously being linked to a move to Real Madrid, who are interested in acquiring the Spanish goalkeeper as preparation for the eventual exit of veteran Iker Casillas from the club.

However, AS reported that the two clubs remain far from reaching an agreement. Manchester United are reportedly asking for €46 million (almost $52 million) for De Gea, but Real Madrid are not willing to budge. If the two clubs fail to reach a common ground on the transfer fee, De Gea will likely stay at Old Trafford and finish his contract.

When asked about the rampant rumors about De Gea's future at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal declined to give any details.

"I don't want to discuss the issue through the media," Van Gaal told Cuatro via ESPN FC. "I will speak with my directors, not with the media."

ESPN also reported that Real Madrid and Manchester United are still having a back-and-forth discussion about a deal for Ramos, who is being targeted by the Red Devils since the offseason started.

Van Gaal was given green light to make another huge spending spree this summer to improve their chances of winning the English Premier League and Champions League titles next season, but it appears the Red Devils are not willing to pay more than €40 million (almost $45 million) for Ramos.

Sources said that Manchester United believes €40 million is enough because Ramos is 18 months older than Thiago Silva during the time he became the highest paid defender in 2012 when Paris Saint-Germain paid €44.4 million for him.

Meanwhile, while they are focused on acquiring big-name players in the summer transfer window, the Red Devils also made sure they will secure the future of one of their top defenders as Phil Jones inked a new deal that will extend his stay at Old Trafford at least until June 2019.

"We are delighted that Phil has signed a new contract," Van Gaal said in a statement posted on the club's official website. "He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions. Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time."

Jones has appeared in 128 games for Manchester United since moving to Old Trafford from Blackburn in 2011.
