Actress Ruby Rose started out as model and MTV VJ in her native Australia before she landed her gig on "Orange Is the New Black," and while she is thriving in her new role, she admits that it wasn't always easy -- during her teenage years, she says that high school was, in fact, "terrible."

During an interview with "Today," the model-turned-DJ-turned-actress pointed out the hit Netlix series was like a second shot at high school in a way.

She compared the set of "OITNB" as "prison high school," which may not sound too delightful, but she really meant it in a positive way.

Rose made her debut in Season 3 of the Netflix hit dramedy. While it was late in the game, she was "welcomed with open arms," according to "Today," which wasn't anything like high school.

"This cast is so ridiculously nice -- like, it's spooky," she said.

"You get on set, and everyone wants to give you and hug and a kiss and exchange numbers and go to karaoke and take you for dinner. ... I had a terrible time in high school, and this was what I dreamed of high school being like. This was like my prison high school. It's fantastic!"

According to the Daily Mail, Rose, who's engaged to British designer Phoebe Dahl, came out as gay at the young age of 12 in her native Australia.

She has been open about her traumatic experience being "severely bullied -- emotionally and physically -- over her sexuality at school."

In 2014, she made a short film called "Break free," which went viral on YouTube. In it, she transitions from a woman to a man. Rose attributes the autobiographical short as one of the reasons that she caught the eye of the "OITNB" producers.
