The lineup picks of this year's Puppy Bowl got some special trainers yesterday: First Pets Bo and Sunny Obama!

Puppy Bowl, as fans of Animal Planet know, is an annual television program on Animal Planet that mimics an American football bowl game similar to the Super Bowl, using puppies. Shown each year on Super Bowl Sunday, the show consists of footage of a batch of puppies at play inside a model stadium, with commentary on their actions. The first Puppy Bowl was shown on Feb. 6, 2005. The puppies featured in the Puppy Bowl are from shelters, and the show contains information on how viewers can adopt rescued puppies and help their local shelter.

According to Politico.com, the producers of the Puppy Bowl were inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign to combat childhood obesity, and they wanted the Puppy Bowl participants to be ambassadors for fitness for the whole family (because the family pooches need to get fit, too!).

"It was so much fun to see the Puppy Bowl X Team work out at the White House!" Michelle Obama said in a statement. "This year's pups showed us that getting active and lapping up plenty of water are important ways to keep our bodies healthy and energized. And as our family has seen with Bo and Sunny, going outside to walk and play with your pet is a perfect way to get moving and have some fun every day."

"Bo and Sunny lined the pups up for practice on the White House South Lawn to run through tire and tackle drills, hone their ball and chew toy skills, play fetch with the kids and of course take a requisite water break with the First Lady followed by a nap in the grass," said a press release from the White House.

In addition to the First Pets, first and second grade students from the Harriet Tubman school in D.C. were on hand to train the puppies as well.
