The summer science fiction series on cable have been adding up one after the other. The newest show for CBS's summer slate is "BrainDead," which takes a jab at the legislative branch of America's government, according to Deadline.

In a perfect storm of sci-fi summer thrillers on the broadcast network, "BrainDead" will join other sci-fi summer hits such as "Under the Dome" and "Extant." Like its predecessors, "BrainDead" has been given a direct-to-series order with 13-episodes for the network.

The show centers around events on Capitol Hill, where a young staffer shows up to work on her first day to find Congress barely functional, which plays comically against the Congress of recent days.

The staffer soon finds out Congress has stopped working because aliens have been eating their brains. Well, actually, alien spawn.

But elected officials of Congress are not the only ones fallen victim to the alien spawn. Their staffers have also become "BrainDead," leading to an awkward and thrilling showdown once the news spreads.

The series is based on an original idea by the creators and executive producers of "The Good Wife," Robert and Michelle King. It will be an hour-long, weekly series.

The original concept for the show was a pilot episode described as "The West Wing" meets "The Strain." For those who have not seen "The Strain," it is a vampire apocalyptic thriller on FX with similar themes to this new series.

CBS chairman Nina Tassler made the announcement for the show yesterday.

"Robert and Michelle [King] have developed an intriguingly original concept with layers of humor, suspense and the supernatural," Tassler said. "We look forward to launching it to U.S. viewers and a worldwide audience next summer."

Entertainment Weekly classified the show as a dramedy.
