The NFL was saved down to the very last hour before the wrath of winter storm Maximus hit New York City Monday morning, but not non-local Super Bowl fans.

According to CBS Sports, the winter storm started to dump snow all over the city by Monday morning - just a few hours after the annual Super Bowl. In fact, a photo uploaded by Brad Mayne @bradmayne shows the Met Life Stadium covered in inches of snow. The snapshot was taken Monday morning.

The Weather Channel reports that winter storm Maximus has been expected to bring a minimum of 4 inches of snow to New York City. The amount of snow could go up to 8 inches, adds The Weather Channel.

Several flights were cancelled due to Maximus and The Weather Channel quotes FlightAware in reporting that about 1,000 flights did not push through, with some delayed. The delayed and cancelled flights were mainly those coming in and out of New York airports Monday and most likely included flights bringing Super Bowl fans home.

Winter storm Maximus will continue to bring in bleak weather for New York City Tuesday and will still be felt Wednesday.

"Snow is likely again Tuesday night. It will then change to a mix of sleet and freezing rain before eventually changing to rain Wednesday," reports The Weather Channel.

Although winter storm Maximus will most probably taper off Wednesday, Alex Sosnowski of AccuWeather reports that two other winter storms will hit NYC in the following weeks.

According to the AccuWeather report, the north and west part of NYC should expect rainfall by middle of next week though the heavy rain could actually progress to snow.

On the third week, another winter storm is expected to make its way to New York City, says the AccuWeather report. Due to the expected unfavorable weather, it is safe to say that New Yorkers should be prepared to celebrate Valentine's Day indoors.
