The story of how the Joker became the insane criminal fans know and love has been attempted before, most notably in the 1989 "Batman" film by Tim Burton starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

David Ayer's "Suicide Squad," yet another upcoming movie in the Batman lineage, seems to be following Burton's lead by including an origin story for the notorious character, played in the upcoming version by Jared Leto. The news of Joker's backstory leaked on Saturday thanks to some photos by Ingrid Kleinig, according to Batman News.

The first thing that you need to remember is that in the 1989 Burton film, the Joker, played by Nicholson, was originally just a street hood working in organized crime. He did not take on the insane persona of the Joker until he was knocked into a vat of chemicals by Batman while in the Ace Chemicals building.

Essentially, it was told on-screen that it was Batman who made the Joker into what he was. A similar theme (though with different details) plays out in the comic books and animated shows.

Kleinig, who is the stunt double for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" feature, has leaked a very revealing photograph from the set of the movie on Imgur.

Judging by the leaked photograph, it's safe to assume that the Joker's origins in the new movie may be similar to the scene portrayed in the 1989 film.

However, Burton's 1989 version (SPOILERS) also portrayed the young Joker-to-be, named Jack Napier, killing Bruce Wayne's parents when Bruce was a child. That change to Batman/Joker canon was controversial at the time and it remains unknown if the new film will attempt to repeat or reconcile that angle of the story as well.

Other members of the crew have leaked photos from the set as well, but most of them have been deleted by now.

Kleinig's photo was the only one that really mattered though, considering it gave fans the most to think about with one little sign on the wall. While some needed a little help to understand the importance of this cryptic pic, dedicated fans of the Batman franchise would have picked up on the implications right away.
