Cable network USA has decided to cash in on all the powerhouse post-apocalyptic dramas on TV these days by optioning for the series "Poor Richard's Almanack," according to an article on Deadline.

"Poor Richard" joins a host of other shows an cable TV that also have a post-apocalyptic theme, which include AMC's "The Walking Dead" and upcoming prequel spinoff "Fear The Walking Dead," as well as "Z-Nation," "The 100," and "The Last Ship."

The new USA show will set itself apart from the popular themes of zombies or viral plagues, instead envisioning a future where people have changed so radically that it leads to the rapid collapse of human society.

The series will center around a group of heroes, who will soon be known as the new "Founding Fathers." Some fans may think this sounds a lot like the popular films of "The Purge" franchise, but "Poor Richard" will in fact be much different.

Even though the show's premise similarly depicts an America pushed to the brink of destruction, the show primarily concerns widespread extinction and the heroes who step up to save the survivors.

The show will be produced by Legendary Television in partnership with Universal Cable Productions. The story was created by Jim Danger Gray, who will also serve as an executive producer on the series. Miguel Sapochnik helped create the series and will serve as a writer. Sapochnik is probably best known for his work on "Game of Thrones."

USA's Executive Vice President of Original Programming Jackie de Crinis had nothing but great things to say about the two producers.

"Jim and Miguel have brought us a bold conceptual world using historical references in a modern-day society," de Crinis told Deadline.

USA is also entertaining another pilot, this one with a supernatural theme, titled "Falling Water." The show "Paradise Pictures," also in the pilot phase for the network, is a period piece with no other details at the moment.
