Channing Tatum's desire to play his favorite mutant superhero, Gambit, might not push through as reports are now claiming that the "Magic Mike" actor might be saying goodbye to the 20th Century Fox movie even before it gets filmed.

According to The Wrap, a source close to the matter has revealed that the movie might be falling apart as Tatum is said to be close to leaving the project, which was hyped up in the recent San Diego Comic Con.

In 2014, the 35-year-old actor played a huge role on why the studio agreed to make "Gambit" in the first place. According to Screen Rant, the "X-Men" character has long been a "passion and interest" for Tatum to portray.

It added that it was also the actor who approached Lauren Shuler Donner to produce the movie.

No details have been revealed as to why the actor is reportedly turning down the iconic role. His relationship with director Rupert Wyatt from "Planet of the Apes" is cordial and well and it's highly unlikely that both can't see eye to eye since Tatum handpicked the director, Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend noted.

But since the "21 Jump Street" actor seems to have "large ambitions" for the upcoming movie, that in itself could shed light on the current concerns that have affected the film's production.

Apparently, Tatum's representatives are still trying to work things out as it was reported that they are still in "active discussions with the studio." The talks are understandable considering that the movie is set for an October 2016 release and filming should start soon.

It is also unclear whether the actor and Donner will remain as producers of the film should Tatum decide to forego the lead role of Remy LeBeau.

20th Century Fox and the actor have not released any statement yet regarding the issue.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the studio planned on shooting the movie in October and a budget of around $150 million has been prepared to see it through. A casting call list has also been leaked, which pointed to other roles that are to be included in the film - the potential female lead and the main antagonist in the movie.

Test screening for actors that will play the role of the female lead is also set to begin soon, with Lea Seydoux from "Spectre" being tied to the project.

"Gambit" is set to hit theaters on October 7, 2016.
