The interval between "Mission Impossible" films has been longer waiting periods unlike other big franchise movie. But all that will soon change, thanks to Tom Cruise. The actor has recently revealed that he is already working on the sixth "Mission Impossible" movie ahead of the debut of "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" this week.

The 53-year-old actor was a guest at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Tuesday to promote the upcoming fifth movie in the series.

According to Variety, Cruise confirmed that he is on-board the sixth installment in the franchise and that development has already begun.

"We're starting to work on it now," said the actor to Stewart. "We'll probably start shooting it next summer."

The actor's comments seem to indicate that the producers are already looking towards the future of the franchise independent of how well the movie will do once it hits theaters this week.

If everything goes well, and the producers are able to complete the cast, director and script soon, then it is possible that the next movie will be released much earlier.

The first "Mission Impossible" movie came out in 1996 and was followed by the sequel four years after. The wait for the third film was the longest as it took six years before "Mission Impossible III" hit theaters.

"Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" was released five years after the third and followed by the upcoming "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" four years after.

Christopher McQuarrie is on board the fifth movie as the screenwriter and director. It's highly likely that Cruise will once again work with the filmmaker for the sixth movie as it appears that he is fast becoming a favorite of the actor.

According to Slash Film, the actor, who portrays Ethan Hunt in the series, also pitched an idea to McQuarrie for a sequel to one of his previous movies, "Edge of Tomorrow." With Cruise showing confidence in how the director handles his projects, McQuarrie might be a good candidate for the next sequel.

J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk joined the three-time Academy Award nominee as producers of "Rogue Nation," along with David Ellison. No mention was made if Abrams and Burk will produce the sixth movie as well.

Paramount Pictures, which has released all the movies in the series, has yet to make a comment on the upcoming sixth film.

"Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" is set to hit 40 countries this week, including the United States, Mexico, South Korea and Australia.
