The CW's new comedy "Significant Mother" is set in Portland, Oregon and follows the story of a 20-something restaurant owner Nate Marlowe (Josh Zuckerman), who lives on a stylish houseboat with a roommate, his best friend Jimmy Barnes (Nathaniel Buzolic). Nate spends most of his time exploring all things bachelor with Jimmy and little time actually operating Lincoln, his restaurant.

In the first episode of "Significant Mother," titled "Welcome to Bonetown," Nate returns from a business trip and walks in on his best pal Jimmy canoodling with his recently separated mother, Lydia Marlowe (Krista Allen). The discovery sends Nate's world into a tailspin.

It gets worse. Nate's dad, Harrison Marlowe (Jonathan Silverman), never really took an interest in his son's life. But now Harrison is determined to win back Lydia, and he's set on using Nate to get what he wants. Nate's dad spends a great deal of time livid that his estranged wife is fraternizing with a much younger man.

Caught up in his parents' feud and his best friend's first serious romance, Nate finds the normalcy of life gone, the relationships with loved ones awkward and his own dating life severely handicapped.

As if Nate's relationship with his mother isn't awkward enough, in episode 2 he dates Lydia's longtime rival and "notorious cougar" Pepper Spinner (Denise Richards).

Viewers can expect glimpses of Portland, including the "Keep Portland Weird" mural and bridges over the Willamette River. While marijuana is legal in Oregon, it doesn't appear that the drug will play a significant role in the jokes or storyline.

"Significant Mother" offers viewers feisty characters, pop culture references and constant wisecracks about sex. The dialogue is, at times, juvenile, but also a lot of fun.

Watch the premiere of "Significant Mother" on Monday, Aug. 3 at 9:30 p.m. on The CW.
