A vehicle crashed into the south barricade of the U.S. Capitol on Friday morning.

According to CNN, the south barricade of the U.S. Capitol was closed after a car crashed into it as U.S. Capitol Police investigated the incident.

The driver of the vehicle, a 51-year-old man named Antonio Pierorazio, is in police custody.

According to a law enforcement source, Pierorazio appeared "imbalanced." Despite this observation, there was no indication that he posed any further threat to security.

As reported by The Washington Post, the suspect was charged with unlawful entry and felony destruction of property. A Capitol Police official stated, however, Pierorazio did not “enter the secure perimeter” of the grounds.

The surrounding streets were closed off and the D.C. Fire Department was on the scene

An individual going by @jmerzie took to Twitter to relay the events as they occurred: “Whoa. Dude just drove full-speed into barricade at Longworth & Capitol full speed. I saw the whole thing. Crazy.”

The on-scene tweeter added, “Wheels were screeching when he turned. Out of state plates (NJ I think). He got out of car and did not resist arrest.”

Finally, the Twitter user wrote, "It was more random than scary once it was clear nothing was in his car and he surrendered."

The Reading Eagle reported Pierorazio is formerly from Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, and his last known residence was in Florida.

Katherine Faulders, a digital journalist for ABC News, posted images on her Twitter account of the scene outside U.S. Capitol.

In a recent tweet the Senate Sergeant at Arms said the activity at the barricade is now over, and the barricade is again open.
