Robert Redford's "The West" has been ordered for a new series on the popular cable network AMC. The network has been known to churn out award-winning series such as "Breaking Bad," "Mad Men" and the smash hit "The Walking Dead."

According to Deadline, the cable network will also be trying its hand at the Western genre by Robert Redford. Redford's own résumé of award winning films will no doubt lead to the eventual success and staying power for the network original. This docudrama will be co-created by "Making of the Mob's" Stephen David.

The series will chronicle the American West and how it evolved between the years of 1865 to 1890. The series will use dramatizations and also feature archival footage. It will delve deeply into the violence that came out of the Old West and how the bloody stories became legends.

The world of cowboys, Indians, lawmen and outlaws, and the bloody escapades that followed them to their status in American lore, will be the prominent theme for the series.

It will also give the more intimate details of the famous names like Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. It will tell the stories that modern American audiences have not heard; the stories that shaped the people before they became famous. It will show what influenced them and what motivated their actions, set against the landscape of the Wild West.

The series has been ordered for an eight-episode run on the cable network and will also feature interviews from people like Ed Harris, Tom Selleck, Kiefer Sutherland and James Caan.

The other Western series on AMC, "Hell on Wheels," is set to wrap up on the network next summer in 2016. "The West" will begin production this month and premiere around the same time.
