iPhone displays are considered by some to be more fragile and less permanent when compared to the ones on Android devices such as the Samsung product line. Most people already use cases but the most vulnerable part of the phone is the screen itself. iPhone cracked or scraped screens might become a thing of the past now that Apple has constructed iPhones with sapphire crystal display covers.

Apple and GT Advance Systems reached a deal over the last year to create a facility in Mesa, Arizona devoted to the creation of sapphire crystal parts for the popular device. Sapphire crystal is already used by Apple in the digicam detector of some of devices, most recently seen in the iPhone 5S's Contact ID.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "There will soon be new types. We're perhaps not prepared to share it, but we're operating on a few truly wonderful things."

A study claims that Apple might be looking into using sapphire crystal materials for the next generation of iPhone display and screens covers. According to Venturebeat: "The company now has the equipment to start mass producing such a screen for its upcoming iPhone models, according to a report from 9to5Mac. Citing an SEC filing and other independently obtained documents, the site said that Apple manufacturing partner GT Advanced has obtained machines enabling it to inspect sapphire for display-sized components (to ensure high yields)."

"These large machines suggest sapphire screens, not sapphire camera lenses or home buttons. The SEC filing, meanwhile, says that GT Advanced will not produce "sapphire goods" for anyone but Apple without express written permission from the company."

GT has 518 of these furnace units which can build 103-116 million phone displays per year and 420 more are on the way. The company has ordered 100 tons of granite to heat up in the machines.
