The fall film season is one of the most exciting times of the year as it begins Oscar season and many of the best dramas are released. However, there are a slew of great action, science fiction films to look forward to as well.

September

Among the September highlights are M. Night Shyamalan's comeback film "The Visit" which marks his first low budget found footage film and is said to be a new turn in his career. Universal expects the horror drama to reclaim the director's status as one of the finest in the industry.

Johnny Depp is also back in "Black Mass," a film that is likely to take the box office by storm and could earn Depp some awards recognition. Warner Bros. has high hopes for the film especially since the movie is premiering at both Toronto and Venice Film Festivals.

Fox will release "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," the follow-up to the science fiction film "The Maze Runner."

The Cannes Film Festival favorite "Sicario" is also opening and that movie is likely to be a huge awards player, especially for Emily Blunt and for cinematographer Roger Deakins. The film has already received rave reviews and will likely get a lot of attention.

Roadside Attractions will release the highly anticipated film "Stonewall" about the historic riots that led to the gay liberation movement while the Weinstein Company will release "About Ray," a movie about a girl in the midst of transitioning into a boy.

The Venice Film Festival opener "Everest" is also scheduled to open and that stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley and Josh Brolin.

Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway will star in the comedy "The Intern" while Fox will release the second part to "Hotel Transylvania."

Other films being released include Oscar hopefuls "99 Homes" with Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon and "Labyrinth of Lies."

October

In October more Oscar contenders are released including Lionsgate's "Freeheld" with Julianne Moore, Ellen Page and Steve Carrell. Tom Hardy's "Legend" will open alongside Robert Zemekis' "The Walk." The latter film will open the New York Film Festival and should easily figure into the Oscar race.

Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs biopic will open as well as Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" and James Vanderbilt's "Truth" starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford.

Brie Larson's "Room" will also play in October as well as "Suffragette" starring Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep and "I Smile Back" with Sarah Silverman.

For those looking for less Oscar films, "The Martian" should appeal to science fiction and Ridley Scott fans. "Pan" will also open and that film looks to be visually striking especially with Joe Wright directing the picture.

The "Goosebumps" adaptation will also arrive after years in development and Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak" will also open. The horror flick stars Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska.

Horror fans will also be delighted with the latest "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" and Bradley Cooper will show off his cooking skills in the Weinstein Company's "Burnt."

November

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2," "The Good Dinosaur" and "Spectre" will all compete for box office crown. All three films are among the most anticipated of the year and should enjoy healthy runs during the holiday season.

"The Peanuts Movie," "Victor Frankenstein" and "Creed" should all have plenty of fans and healthy box office grosses.

Meanwhile, a slew of Oscar contenders will also open including the Sundance hit "Brooklyn" with Saoirse Ronan and "Trumbo" with Helen Mirren and Bryan Cranston. The catholic scandal film "Spotlight" will also debut while "The 33" will come to the U.S. after a healthy foreign box office.

Heavy hitters "Carol," "The Danish Girl" and "I Saw the Light" should claim big specialty box office and most likely become front runners for Best Picture.
