The cast for "Dr. Strange" has been slowly filling out, with Benedict Cumberbatch set to star as the title character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. But there have been some late rumors and news that seem to pointed toward "Hannibal's" Mads Mikkelsen joining the cast, according to Deadline.

What is quite clear is that the film project has yet to cast its lead villain, and there has been no word yet as to who or what that big bad is going to be. When it comes to Marvel Comics, there are an array of villains to choose from in every franchise.

But the role of the unnamed villain is likely to go to Mikkelsen, given his extremely raw and authentic performance in the NBC show "Hannibal" for the past three seasons.

It is also quite unusual to see someone of his caliber and gritty background playing a role in a Disney film. But Mikkelsen is already confirmed to be starring in next year's "Star Wars: Rogue One." Apparently, Disney is where the actor feels quite at home.

The film, which is directly based off the Marvel Comic, was also rumored to have Rachel McAdams signed on to the project in a leading role. But there has been nothing set to ink for her yet either.

The only confirmations thus far are Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Fans do already know that Mikkelsen was released from his "Hannibal" contract following the show's sudden and tragic cancellation this summer. So he is definitely available for the film.

"Doctor Strange" will be directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Jon Spaihts. It is set to have a Nov. 14 release next year, following the string of highly anticipated DC summer releases set for next summer.
