The mantra "anything can happen" may be a favorite of the MTV Video Music Awards, but this year's winners were pretty much what most fans expected.

Before the night of the show, fans were already aware that rapper Kanye West, who attended the award show with wife Kim Kardashian, would be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

This award, originally known as the Lifetime Achievement Award but renamed after the death of legendary singer Michael Jackson, has been presented to musicians whose careers have had a huge impact on pop culture. Recent recipients of the award include Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

The biggest winner of the night was country-turned-pop singer Taylor Swift, who took home four awards. Swift won the awards for Best Pop Video and Best Female Video for her song "Blank Space," Best Collaboration, and the biggest award of the night, Video of The Year for "Bad Blood" featuring Kendrick Lamar. Swift beat out Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson and Lamar for the award.

Lamar, who didn't attend the award show, was up for a few awards, including Video of The Year for "Alright," a video that received plenty of critical acclaim for its depiction of crime and violence against black lives. The video, filmed entirely in black and white, took home the award for Best Direction.

Nicki Minaj, who stirred plenty of drama about not being nominated for Video of The Year, according to The Huffington Post, took home the award for Best Hip Hop Video for "Anaconda."

While female artists dominated, plenty of male artists took home awards including Mars and Ronson for "Uptown Funk," which won Best Male Video; Falll Out Boy, who took home Best Rock Video for "Uma Thurman"; and OK Go, who won Best Choreography and beat out artists like Beyoncé and Sheeran. Big Sean, West and John Legend won the award for Best Video With a Social Message for "One Man Can Change the World."

Other winners included Fetty Wap, who won the Artist to Watch award, and 5 Seconds of Summer, who won Song of the Summer for "She's Kinda Hot," reported MTV.

While Beyoncé was a big time nominee, the super star only won in the professional category, winning Best Editing for her "7/11" video.
