Ashley Wagner insisted she belonged at the Olympics ever since her controversial addition to the U.S. Figure Skating team. It's customary that, during an Olympic year, the top three finishers at the U.S. National Championships get to compete on figure skating's biggest stage. Unfortunately for Wagner, her uneven performance lead to a fourth-place finish. But she was selected by the U.S. Figure Skating Association for the Olympic team anyway over Mirai Nagusu, who claimed third place.

After the short program Wagner sits in sixth place, behind fellow American Gracie Gold. She's also just ahead of 15-year-old American Polina Edmunds. The fiery competitor is determined to end her Olympic's on a high note when she competes in the long program Thursday.

"I think I might have something up my sleeve," Wagner told Yahoo Sports.

"There is nothing to lose," Wagner continued. "I think that is the great part about how I am set up for [Thursday]. This is the lovely sport of figure skating and it is always full of surprises."

Could that surprise be a triple axel? Mao Asada of Japan is the only woman regularly performing those in competitions, and she falls as often as she lands. Or could Wagner do the unthinkable and go for a quad jump?

"To throw in another jump that she is not comfortable with, the risk would be crazy," remarked two-time Canadian silver medalist Elvis Stojko.

"If she lands it she can pick up extra points, but it could also be detrimental. But that is the kind of warrior that she is, she is not afraid to lay it all out there and that makes her a great fighter."

Again the Winter Olympics only come once every four years... so why not?

"Going into [Thursday] night honestly I worked so hard the past month that I really just owe it to myself to go out there and do what I have been doing in training," Wagner said.

"It sounds so PC-athlete but honestly I worked my butt off every single day since nationals and I have been way too tired, way too sweaty and exhausted and angry with training to not go out there and do it. So this is really for me, this is my Olympic experience."

Good luck, Ashley!
